Our Story

A Century of History at Niemeyer’s Rugged River Resort

When you stay at Niemeyer’s Rugged River Resort, you become part of its rich history. This land was once home to the Native Ojibwa, trappers, fur traders, and loggers, and today, we continue to carry on that tradition.

In the early 1900s, the property served as a logging camp, with some cabins originally built to house and feed the lumberjacks. By 1935, as the logging industry changed, trappers lived in the bunkhouses until Ted and Bess Stallman purchased the property and opened Fun-Stal Resort.

In 1977, Lyle and Judy Niemeyer purchased the resort and made it their family home. In 2002, their children, Kelly and Corby, along with their families, continued the tradition—welcoming many of the same families who have been vacationing here for generations.

The resort is now solely owned by Corby & Sheila Niemeyer, and many aspects of the property still reflect its 1930s and 40s charm. Resort upkeep and renovations are ongoing, ensuring that while the nostalgia remains, your stay is comfortable and enjoyable.

  • Cabin #1 was Ted & Bess Stallman’s first home at the resort.

  • Cabin #6 was their garage.

  • Their second home, built in the mid-1940s, sits at the center of the resort and is still home to Judy & Lyle Niemeyer.

  • A small rambler built for Bess Stallman in the late 1960s later became the office and owner living quarters in 2002.

In 2008, we added an in-ground heated pool and hot tub to accommodate both families and fishermen. Cabins 2, 4, and 5, each over 100 years old, were in need of repair:

  • Cabin #2, once a cook’s shanty and dining hall, was remodeled into a spacious 1-bedroom cabin.

  • Cabins #4 & #5 were rebuilt in 2014 on the original sites, incorporating elements of the original cabins into today’s charming 3-bedroom log cabins.

  • In 2017 – The boat house was revamped into a gathering space.
  • In 2022 Cabin #3 had a little upgrade on windows, heating/AC and we shored up a few walls.
  • in 2024 Cabin #6 had a slight upgrade to plumbing, and its kitchen.

Situated on a peninsula, these well-spaced cabins overlook the beautiful Mississippi River and are surrounded by 100 acres of Northwoods scenery, offering a true sense of privacy and tranquility.

Spend your vacation at Niemeyer’s Rugged River Resort and experience a unique blend of history, nature, and relaxation. Come make us part of your family’s tradition.
